Substance abuse is, unfortunately, the trend is that more and more children are starting to experiment with drugs and alcohol at an earlier age.  Where we thought our children were safe in middle school, we see that more children are starting to try out these illegal substances in 7th and 8th grade.

Since the teen brain is still changing and remodeling until people are in their 20's, the longer kids can stay away from these substances, the less of an affect it will have on them. Studies show that the earlier children start using drugs and alcohol, the higher the likelihood is that they will become addicted  Reference: http://healthland.time.com/2011/06/29/teens-and-drugs-rite-of-passage-or-recipe-for-addiction/ .  It does notappear to matter which drugs they are using or if they are drinking alcohol. In addition, adolescents who smoke a lot of marijuana have as much as a 7-fold increase in the risk of developing schizophrenia - that is really scary! Early exposure may critically alter the development of some brain receptors. Reference: http://www.schizophrenia.com/prevention/streetdrugs.html
